In today’s New York Times, there is an interesting article about drugs offering fitness. The two drugs are Aicar and GW1516 which activate the muscle remodeling system in mice. In studies of mice running on a treadmill, Aicar increased endurance by 44% after 4 weeks of treatment. This is without any type of training. GW156 [...]

Quality of runs

A few posts ago I asked the question of how people get in long runs. Obviously, this is an important aspect to marathon training, however, I also wonder how many runs we really have that are of real “quality.” I think, and I include myself here, that sometimes we get into a rut of number [...]
Animal sightings for the week

This week, I saw a few deer and two red foxes. Those are always such a treat to see sinceI don’t see them that often. On today’s run, I saw two dead snakes, flattened to a pancake. I always feel kind of bad about the roadkill that is seen all the time. The only good [...]
Funny story–well at least I found it that way

This past Monday, I had to take my car into the shop. I planned on dropping it off and then running home. It was a little over 12 miles, so I figured I’d take on 6-8 more miles and consider it a long run. Well, a few things went wrong from the get go. I [...]

The Good:
In general, my runs for the last few weeks have been fairly good and consistent. I’ve been proud of myself for literally running every single hill. In the past, I’d run half the hill, and then walk the rest. I feel especially positive of this achievement, because I find hill running is actually a [...]

For those of you who have been reading/following my blog, you know I have hemmed and hawed at making a decision for my next marathon. Well, I have finally come to a conclusion. The fall marathon will be:
I’m happy with this decision. I know the decision took me awhile, but I really needed to weigh [...]
The animal not-so sighting of the week

I say “not-so sighting,” because I did not see this until it was too late and after the fact. Yesterday, I was outside in the evening. The temperature was 90 and very humid. I noticed a few branches and weeds I wanted to trim, so I did that for about ten minutes. All the sudden, [...]

I ran in a few different places this week instead of all my usual country routes where I see deer bounding by or rabbits scurrying off. One of the places I ran is part of an agricultural research farm belonging to one of the local universities. I’ve run there before but it had been awhile. [...]
How do people fit in all these long runs?

For the past month, my work schedule has been weird. The days I normally had off, I did not. It kind of screws with my head sometimes since I am a very “plan” oriented type person. I’m used to schedules or at least knowing what I’m in for beforehand. During this time, I struggled with [...]

This week, not too many animals out. I ran into three deer and saw two rabbits. Nothing dead this week either which was nice.
